HOSPITALITY
Ushers:
The ushers help visitors find a seat before or during a service, collect the offering, and count attendance for the worship service. Ushers are needed for all three services—the 9:00 AM blended service, the 11:00 AM traditional service and the 11:00 AM modern service. *Background checks are required and will be provided for all usher team members.
First Impressions:
The First Impressions Team can be recognized each Sunday by their smiles and red shirts. They greet members and guests every Sunday, help people cross the street in front of the church safely, and help people find their way within the church. They currently have five teams that rotate every five weeks. On average, each team serves one Sunday a month. On their assigned Sundays, First Impressions team members are expected to serve from 8:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. but will be able to attend one of the worship services and Sunday School. *Background checks are required and will be provided for all First Impressions team members.
Gatekeepers:
The Gatekeepers help to create a safe environment for the church and those in attendance by always being aware of the church surroundings. They are trained in first aid and also receive special response training.
WORSHIP
The Chancel Choir:
The Chancel Choir is a group of talented singers who help lead worship every Sunday for Traditional worship in the Sanctuary. The choir sings a wide range of musical styles, so there is something for everybody. Members range from amateurs to professional singers (with most being somewhere in between!) New members are always welcome—no audition required. You have the option to sing at one or both services.
The Handbell Choir:
The handbell choir can always use another “hand.” It is a fun group that regularly plays during the Sunday worship services and occasionally outside the church.
Modern Worship Team:
The Modern Worship Team is a welcoming group of talented musicians. They are focused on leading our Modern Worship service as they praise God in a real and meaningful way. New musicians are always welcome to join!
Media:
From visual arts through projections and lights, to helping the Music Department by running the sound board, there are many ways to be involved in our Media Team. This ministry is also a great place for those interested in photography to serve. Many of the photos taken can be used on our social accounts and the website to help tell the story of our church.
Communion Prep:
The Communion Prep Team works to ensure our monthly communions are prepped for us all to receive. They also work as servers during communion. On each Communion Sunday, 2-3 people arrive at 7:30 AM to prepare the bread and juice for all three services. They are also responsible for refreshing everything after the 9:00 AM service and prepping for the 11 AM traditional service. Once all of the services are complete, a clean up team with 2-3 people wash and place cups back in the golden trays.
Altar Flowers:
The Altar Flower Team is responsible for the beautiful altar flowers we all get to enjoy each Sunday in the Sanctuary. The team divides the large arrangement into three smaller ones and delivers them to three church members the following week.
Altar Flower Donations:
This ministry takes care of writing thank you notes to the families who donate the altar flowers. Members will be responsible for writing 4-5 thank you notes for their assigned month.
Acolytes:
This opportunity is open to all 4th, 5th and 6th grade members of the congregation. The acolytes usher in God’s light at the beginning of the service as a symbol to the congregation that God is with us during worship. Once the service has concluded, the acolytes carry the light out of the Sanctuary as a reminder that God is with us everywhere.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
City of Midland:
This is a relatively new ministry that started to take shape in late 2024. First Methodist Midland has been partnering with the city of Midland to show appreciation for our neighbors across the street that work so hard to keep our city running. There are a few events lined up for fall 2025 for members of the congregation to have the opportunity to serve.
Burnet Elementary:
This team provides special treats to the teachers and staff of Burnet Elementary monthly during the school year. There are also opportunities for prayer partners within this ministry. Members of this ministry host a lunch for teachers and staff that takes place in the church Atrium in August.
Coats for Kids:
Members of this ministry work with Midland ISD to collect, sort, and deliver coats to students within the district. The church wide coat drive takes place in early fall. These helpers sort, label and deliver the coats to each school to be distributed before the weather turns cold. Last year our church donated more than 1,100 coats!
Christmas in the Park:
This is a fun event during the Christmas season that is open to the entire community. There’s music, great food, games, hot chocolate and opportunities for prayer. Santa even stops by! There are several ways to serve at this event and the more the merrier! All of this Christmas magic takes place at Centennial Park right down the street from the church.
Easter Bash:
The Easter Bash is one of our big events during the spring! It’s also open to the entire community. We offer multiple Easter Egg hunts based on age. (There’s even one for adults!) Church members can serve in face painting, greeting, work the petting zoo, being a food line server, and so much more! This event always takes place the Saturday before Easter Sunday.
Needle Works Ministry:
This ministry meets every third Tuesday of the month to sew Christmas stockings, clothes, blankets and bibs. They donated 300 stockings this year as well as hundreds of blankets to Hospice and the VA. It’s okay if you don’t consider yourself a seamstress–they have plenty of other projects they’d be happy to have your help with!
CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRIES
Children’s Ministry:
*Any helper working within the children’s and youth ministries will be required to complete a provided background check.
Sunday School Small Group Leader:
The Sunday School Small Group Leader helps the Children’s Ministry accomplish its mission “LET’S join together in our walk with Jesus as we: Love, Encourage, Teach, Serve” by developing relationships with the student, modeling an authentic Christian faith, and teaching them the essentials of following Christ. This is a one-year commitment from August to May. Helpers are given the first Sunday off each month to attend their regular Sunday morning church activities.
Kids Church Shepherds:
Kids Church Shepherds will help assist the Kids Church Worship Leaders in songs, games and activities. These helpers serve one Sunday each month from August-May with the exception of Communion Sunday when there is no Kids Church.
Wednesday Night Shepherds:
Shepherds will accompany children while participating fully in the lesson and activities. They will also assist the leaders in songs and games. These helpers will serve one month during the school year (August-November & January-May) on Wednesday nights 6:15pm-7:30pm.
Daddy/Daughter Dance:
This event was a huge success last February. Helpers will work together to put this dance on once again for the dads and daughters of our congregation and the community as a special way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. It’s an evening of dancing, games and lots of fun!
Mother/Son Night:
Can’t forget about the boys! This event is a fun time for moms and sons to make memories and takes place in the spring.
Christmas Carnival:
This carnival takes place early in December during Wednesday Night Live. It is an evening full of Christmas fun and games for the kids!
Ministry of Moms (MOMS):
Mothers from different stages come together twice a month for breakfast, learning and wonderful conversation. There are monthly playdates and also scheduled Moms’ Night Outs planned! They love having a service project. Last Christmas they sponsored a family from Burnet Elementary and had wrapped, donated gifts delivered. There are several ways to serve within this ministry. Roles include being a Mentor Mom, a Table Leader, helping with communications and helping to organize Moms’ Night Out. Their fall session will begin in September and end in December.
Youth Ministry:
*Any helper working within the children’s and youth ministries will be required to complete a provided background check.
Youth Sunday Night Helper:
The Sunday Night Helper participates in the worship and teaching as well as visits with youth group members during the meal and game time. Three adult helpers serve each week for about two hours.
Youth Sunday School Teacher:
This is a school year commitment from August-May. Teachers will have the first Sunday of each month off in addition to holidays and special Sundays. A weekly curriculum is provided by the Youth Director with two training events offered during the year.
Discipleship and Bible Nerds Group Leader:
Discipleship Group leaders are responsible for leading teaching and conversation for a specific group and gender each week. These helpers get to know the students and provide encouragement. This is a school year commitment from August-May serving for about 1.5 hours on Wednesday nights. Helpers have the third Wednesday night of each month off. Curriculum is provided by the Youth Director and training events are offered each year.
Confirmation Mentors:
Confirmands are divided into small groups referred to as “tribes” with around 4-6 students per tribe. Each tribe has three mentors—two adults (one male, one female) and one youth mentor (11th or 12th grade). The two adults guide their tribe through the Confirmation process. There are eight Thursday classes, a Confirmation retreat and Confirmation Sunday that helpers will be expected to attend. This commitment begins in January and goes through the end of February.
