· A man writing at the post office desk was approached by an older fellow with a postcard in his hand. The old man said, "Sir, could you please address this postcard for me?"
The man gladly did so, agreeing also to write a short message and sign the card for the man. Finally, the younger man asked, "Now, is there anything else I can do for you?"
The old fellow thought about it for a moment and said, "Yes, at the end, could you just put 'P.S. Please excuse the sloppy handwriting.'"
How often it is that we complain against those who do the most for us. --John Yates
· Don't you appreciate the ministry of our ushers? They show up every Sunday for worship and manage to give us a smile and a helping hand. This past Sunday, we were doing our first-Sunday communion portion of the service. Since the clergy did anointing at that time, we were short servers at the last minute. We got that worked out and when it was time to invite the congregation forward, the ushers wouldn't move. I nodded my head like "go ahead" and they wouldn't move. Scooter Brown smiled at me, got close enough for me to hear him, and said, "We need the trays for the people who can't come forward." Oh. . .! Everything moved smoothly from there, and we covered all the bases. Scooter is often one of our lead ushers for worship-and he along with a number of other folks are on duty at all times during the worship service. I don't take them for granted, but it is probably time to give an "atta-boy" to the ushers.
· This week I'll be preaching sermon #2 in the series, "No Perfect People: Insights from the Rough Side of King David." If you missed last week's message, you missed the introductory message to the series, so pick it up in c.d. or print in the narthex. This Sunday at 8:30 and 10:45 (11:00 at West Campus), it's "Soft Music for a Hard Heart," and we'll see how David encourages and brings relief to King Saul through playing and singing. John Rech will continue his sermon on Daniel. I asked him if he could have lions present on the day he preached about the Lion's Den, but he thought I was asking a little much. John will preach in the Contemporary Service at 10:45 in the Fellowship Hall.
